The Google Reader Drama

Google Reader is retiring as of July 1st, 2013.

When I read that little notice, I had a mild panic attack and possibly uttered a few inappropriate words. But I soon recovered and decided to take action. I started this thread over at Two Peas. Out of that conversation, it seems the two front runners to replace Google Reader are Bloglovin and Feedly. So I decided to give both a trial run.

I found them easy to set up and transition into from Google Reader. Rather than go into a long explanation of their pros and cons, I recommend this article.

After a week of using both, my personal preference is for... (drum roll)... Feedly. On my iPad. I'm using the Cards View option for a Pinterest-style experience. Love that. There's less scrolling than Bloglovin, and I can easily get to the actual web page if I want to pin something or add a comment. Of course, Feedly works just fine on my desktop and laptop. But that iPad app is awesome. When I started looking for more blogs to add to this reader, I knew I was hooked.

No matter how you choose to do it, I hope you will keep following my little blog.  I've installed a Bloglovin button in my sidebar to make the transition easy. If you're using Feedly, go to your Feedly home page, select Add Website and type or paste www.suealthouse.com. You can always sign up to follow by email, which I understand is still a popular preference. I also post on Facebook and Twitter every time I update. Goodness. So many choices.

So how are you handling the Google Reader Drama?

  2. Thanks for the information. I've got to make the transition. Mainly I use my little 'next' button in Google Chrome so I want to be sure to continue that route. I'll definitely keep following your blog. You're a favorite!

  3. Thank you for the review, Sue. I added a Bloglovin badge to my blog earlier this week. Hopefully I'm all set, but with technology yo never know. LOL!

  4. My initial reaction was much the same as the redhead's! I'm beginning to think I'm an old fogie because I'm not enamored of the tablet/Pinterest interfaces of so many things these days - I don't always want to look at a screen full of multiple images like on Pulse. I like a simpler look. I'm trying Feedly right now, but will give Bloglovin a look also. Thanks for the input, Sue.

  5. I have everything in Bloglovin' but I'll admit that I'm still using Google Reader while I can. I'll miss it.

  10. I am following you by email... that is my preferred way to follow, so the Google Reader upset has not really fazed me.

  11. I switched to Bloglovin because someone else recommended it and I don't have the patience or decision making abilities to research lots of options right now! I've still got all my favourites :-)
