Sometimes Color Is Not My Friend

You know you have at least one. That color you never use on a layout. The patterned paper and cardstock that remains in your stash, daring you to pull it out and put it on a page. The July Challenge over at Scrapbookers Anonymous is to challenge yourself to make a page with that hard to use color.
My hard to use color is purple. Which is very strange, because growing up it was my favorite color. I even had a purple bedroom with light purple walls and purple shag carpet. But I digress. So I created this layout with small doses of purple patterned paper from a monthly kit. Just a few touches here and there, with lots of neutral white. And now, this is one of my favorite layouts.
Another key to working with a difficult color is to make it monochromatic except for maybe some little accent colors. All I used on this layout was the patterned paper, black and white.
I also think one of the keys to using that hard to use color is to use the least offensive shade of it that you can find. This pale purple cardstock, more like lilac, that holds my journaling is actually kind of pretty.

Now it's your turn! You have until the end of the month to submit your layout. All the details are right here.

  3. Purple is my least favourite colour for scrapbooking with too. I can wear it, I just don't like to make things with it. I think you have arrived at the perfect solutuion here - it's very pretty indeed.

  4. Purple shag carpet? How did you talk your parents into that. Any photos? Anyway, I love purple shades but the scrapbooking industry doesn't and it is hard to find this color in papers. Like the idea of using the least offensive shade. I plan to play along on this one later in the month. TFS!

  5. Ha! I loved purple when I was young too -- must be one of those colors we kind of grow out of. Great job using it -- and I love your mix of alphas, too. Oh, and your subject, of course!

Off to the big Freedom Grab! Maybe I'll see you there.

  11. I am with you - purple is hard for me. I love what you did - it's not the focus but more of an accent along with the neutrals. That's a great way to make it work. I love your title - the MEGA really stands out. :) And this reminds me I need to get out those Thicker shapes that I still have in my stash......

  12. Great layout Sue - the purple worked well with those photos. I use so many colors, I'm not sure what my hard-to-use color would be! :>)

  13. Nice layout! You're still trying to make me jealous with the Mega Meet? LOL! I don't do much orange or yellow unless they're mixed in with a patterned paper, but it's not something I really think about. Blue and red are probably my favorites.
